As the last leg of our honeymoon, my wife and I recently stayed at Victoria Falls River Lodge in the Island Treehouse Suites in November 2023. We’ve never given a review before but felt compelled to share so others don’t make the same mistake. To say we were underwhelmed by the accommodations and experience, from start to finish, is an understatement. Given the cost of over $2k USD a night, we were shocked at the state of the hotel, which felt sadly run down and tired, lacking any semblance of “luxury” that the price tag and hotel marketing would suggest. 1. Limited AC and no AC in the bathrooms: The rooms and bathrooms are true “tree” houses, made entirely of wooden planks that feel almost unfinished. Each room is equipped with one small AC unit that did not adequately cool our room. Because of the small, single AC unit located near the door of the main room, there is no air conditioning in the bathrooms. Temperatures were north of 90 degrees during our visit and given such, it felt well above 100 degrees in our bathroom (and worse once you ran the shower). 2. Limited basic amenities that were half used: The restrooms had low quality shampoo, conditioner and soaps that were half used and there were no basic bathroom amenities such as q-tips, cotton pads, etc. While we appreciate the hotels sustainability efforts, it would have been nice for the hotel to refill the shampoo / soap / conditioner, so you don’t feel as if your using the prior guests seconds. See photo. 3. Very low-quality food: We are not picky eaters but would consider ourselves food lovers. The food served (particularly dinner) was borderline disgusting and particularly upsetting given the 5-star price tag. It felt like a 2 star food offering. See photo below of the cauliflower appetizer (only appetizer available) they served on the first night (picture was "as is" and had not been touched). 4. Bottom shelf alcohol and mixers: When we went to the main bar to have a drink before dinner, they informed us that only bottom shelf spirits were included in our stay (Jose Cuervo I believe was the tequila offering). When asked if they had any fresh fruit juice mixer options (e.g. grapefruit juice, etc) the bartender offered a can of fruit punch or a can of red grape juice. The wine in the room was less than 100 rand (~$5 USD). 5. Room and general accommodations: Overall, both the main area (where you eat, lounge, etc.), bar area, and rooms were very underwhelming and felt dated and weathered. You almost got the sense that the hotel was barely hanging on. The plastic plunge pool in our treehouse villa was filled with dirty water and the plastic lounge chairs on the balcony were broken. See photo. 6. Hotel Staff: The Island Manager and our private guide for Victoria Falls were the one (almost) saving grace. The Island Manager was kind, professional and attempted to be accommodating (offering us an off-island alternative) but we were so dissatisfied with the resort that we declined the
