A charming, very traditional bed and breakfast in a historic building. Mark couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. Clean and comfortable The rate includes a terrific breakfast. Highly recommend this as your stay option in Tākaka.

What a fabulous house. The rooms are large, the beds comfortable, the hot water plentiful and everywhere very clean. There is really interesting art throughout the house, and lovely furniture and furnishings. Mark was really helpful and gave us lots of good advice on where to visit, how to get the most from our walks and recommended restaurants. He was always available when needed and made us extremely welcome. We loved breakfast, especially the fruit salad and scrambled eggs. Would recommend this accommodation.

My wife and I were only here for a night but we’re thoroughly impressed with our stay at Shady Rest. Mark and his team were welcoming, and our suite was large, clean, and comfortable. The rest of the house has a great vintage vibe as well. It was great getting to know Mark, and chatting with a local about the area. He had some great recommendations for things that we initially overlooked in the area, not to mention a fabulous cook for breakfast :) Would highly recommend the Shady Rest to anyone in the Takaka area. You won’t regret it! Cheers!

Stayed at the Shady Rest for a week earlier in December. Fantastic location with lots of things to do and explore around Golden Bay. Treat yourself to a bit of luxury and enjoy great hospitality where nothing is too much trouble.

The Shady Rest was a delightful 1900s house saturated with character situated close to the town centre (an easy stroll). The host, Mark, made us very welcome. The bedrooms were spacious and each room had a separate bathroom. In the morning we had a huge breakfast that set us up well for the day. Well worth the stay.

Dave was an exceptional host and didn't mind the (very) late check-in at all. He even let us change rooms free of charge after we accidentally booked a single room instead of a double.The breakfast was amazing and we loved his chef outfit so much. Everything was literally a 10/10.

Historic 100 year old charming home. Well appointed with tin ceilings, original hardwood carved walls/molding, decorative fireplaces, remodeled private bathrooms and charming English Innkeeper. You will be greeted by Innkeeper and a cup of tea. Mark provided an introduction to the area, pointing out hiking trails and restaurant recommendations that were spot on. The room and bedding were suitably comfortable. We enjoyed out three days exploring Takara and certainly enjoyed the Shady Rest. Highly recommended
